Shout out to Aymar Jean Christian (Televisual) for mentioning Queen Hussy in an article that dissects the problem with HBO’s show, “Girls”. No doubt you’ve heard some of the criticisms that the show has received so I won’t rehash them here. In the spirit of shifting blame away from the show and back on the industry, Aymar highlights diverse web series that could use an “FX-style” pick-up and that list includes Queen Hussy.

In the spirit of shifting blame back on the industry and being constructive, I’ve decided to link to some web shows mainstream TV critics might not know about because there are so many.

On this day in 1989 Huey P Newton, the co-founder of The Black Panther Party for Self Defense was shot to death during a drug deal. Huey’s death was tragic but his life was complicated, controversial and also impressive. He was a charismatic man, an activist, a political leader and an author. He and his brothers & sisters in the Black Panther Party accomplished a great deal for their community.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is scheduled to be dedicated on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall on August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of King’s “I have a Dream” speech.
King will be the first African-American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall. The memorial includes the 30 foot tall sculpture “Stone of Hope” (photo above). The King family and President Obama, among others, will participate in the ceremony. If you’re in the DC area, check it out and let me know what you think.

Is it me or does the CGI look amazing? Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th, but for a different take on the ape with human qualities story check out PROJECT NIM (in theaters now). Nim was a chimpanzee raised by a family in the 70′s, was breast fed by a human (yes, really), learned sign language & smoked the occasional joint. Personally, I plan on seeing both – who’s with me?

This past Sunday Morgan Freeman received an AFI Life Achievement Award for a career that spans more than 50 years. And while I’m a huge fan of his unforgettable and often complex work, I am equally impressed with his determination. By age 12, Freeman knew he wanted to be an actor but didn’t pursue it professionally until in his twenties.

I have to say, for me testimonial ads don’t always work, especially ones dealing with medical or health issues. I have never been a smoker and while I believe in the anti-smoking movement, the commercials often cause me to change the channel. However, for a few months now I’ve been really intrigued by the New York-Presbyterian Hospital ad campaign.

A new documentary about the influence of Hong Kong cinema on Quentin Tarantino’s work will soon hit the airwaves in France. Tarantino: The Disciple of Hong Kong is the latest from directing team Jac & Johan. The duo even managed to get an interview with director Ringo Lam, his first in 10 years. Lam’s film City On Fire is believed to be the real inspiration for Reservoir Dogs. Not sure if or when The Disciple of Hong Kong will be available in the states, but for now enjoy the trailer.
